How it works

How Rikai Sensei works

Rikai Sensei is built on established second-language-acquisition methods, not guesswork. It combines a modern spaced-repetition algorithm, task-based practice, two adaptive learning tracks, and an on-device Japanese language engine — all aimed at one outcome: you remember more, in less time, and can actually use what you learn.

Spaced repetition with FSRS

Spaced repetition (SRS) schedules each item for review just before you’re likely to forget it, so memory is reinforced efficiently instead of through brute-force cramming. Most apps still use SM-2, the 1980s algorithm behind early Anki, which moves every item along fixed interval multipliers regardless of how memory really behaves.

Rikai Sensei uses FSRS (the Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler), a modern, data-driven algorithm that models each item with its own stability and difficulty and predicts your recall probability directly. Because the schedule adapts to how you actually remember each word, kanji, or grammar point, FSRS targets your chosen retention level with fewer, better-timed reviews than SM-2 — less wasted effort on things you already know, less forgetting of things you don’t. Every review you do updates the model and refines what comes next.

Learning by doing, with TBLT

Knowing words isn’t the same as being able to use them. Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is a well-established methodology that organizes learning around completing meaningful tasks — accomplishing a real communicative goal — rather than drilling rules in isolation.

Rikai Sensei includes pre-authored TBLT scenarios where you make the real language choices a situation calls for and get immediate, targeted feedback: choosing the right level of politeness (keigo) for who you’re speaking to, or handling clinical exchanges on the Medical track. You don’t just study the language — you rehearse using it before you need it for real.

Two tracks: Express and Immersive

One size doesn’t fit every learner, so Rikai Sensei runs two tracks over the same curriculum:

  • Express — streamlined and time-efficient, with lighter explanations for learners who need to make steady progress around a busy life. Same essential content, less overhead. (Not gamified — no streak pressure or loss-aversion mechanics.)
  • Immersive — the full pedagogical depth: detailed grammar, pitch and register analysis, and FSRS-tuned review for learners aiming at mastery and JLPT/certification goals.

You choose your track and can switch any time — your progress follows you.

Reading support that understands Japanese

Rikai Sensei runs a Japanese language engine on your device (no server round-trip, works offline) that performs real morphological analysis of any sentence. That powers:

  • Accurate furigana — readings generated from actual tokenization, not naive character lookup, so they’re correct in context.
  • Tap-to-define lookups — tap any word in an example sentence to see its dictionary entry instantly.
  • Smart furigana (optional) — hide readings for kanji you already know, so support fades as you grow.

Built for real goals

All of this is sequenced against concrete targets: the JLPT ladder for general Japanese (N5–N4 available today, with higher levels in development) and the Medical ladder (M5–M4) for clinical Japanese. Lessons unlock in a deliberate order with prerequisites, so you’re always building on a solid foundation rather than wandering through disconnected topics.
